The Corporation for National and Community Service reports that in 2012:
- 1 in 4 adults volunteered through an organization
- 64.5 million Americans volunteered nearly 7.9 billion hours
- The estimated value of this volunteer service is nearly $175 billion, based on the Independent Sector’s estimate of the average value of a volunteer hour.

A study published in Psychology and Aging found that older adults who spent at least 200 hours a year volunteering seemed to have a 40 percent lower risk of high blood pressure, compared with those who didn’t volunteer at all.
